On Friday, 5th of February, KAUST SPE Student chapter organized a one-day field trip to Harrat Rahat, about volcanoes and the geology of western part of Saudi Arabia, nearby KAUST campus. We visited several outcrops and panoramic spots. The purpose was to get a better understanding of interactions between Red Sea formation, the faulting and fracturing that occurred during the breakup phase and emplacement of the lava field East of the Red Sea Escarpment. In addition we visited outcrops displaying contacts between rift sediments and lava deposit or between Arabian Shield basement and lava flows in the paleo valleys. We concluded our trip with a hike to one of the volcanoes and reached its top, despite strong wind, intensive rain and very low temperature! Thanks to everyone who joined the trip!
This event was sponsored by ANPERC (professor Hussein's group) and led by Dr. Jakub Fedorik and Dr. Antoine Delaunay, geologists from Professor Abdulkader Alafifi group. We are very grateful to them that they made this trip happen.
