On the 22 November 2023, Aytaj Khodayeva successfully defended her MSc thesis entitled: Assessment of CO2 Storage Potential in Hawtah and Nuayyim Trends, Central Saudi Arabia. Aytaj's research was mentored by Professor Abdulkader M. Alafifi.

Congratulations to Maria C. Lopez Suarez on successfully defending her thesis. The thesis examined the origin of peridotites from Thurwah ophiolite (Saudi Arabia) and their potential for CO2 mineralization. Maria's thesis was mentored by Professor Abdulkader M. Alafifi.

Dr. Delaunay presented a poster entitled “Evolution of the eastern Red Sea rifted margin: morphology, uplift processes and source-to-sink dynamics” at RST 2023. The poster relates to a recently accepted paper that will soon be published. Please check back for more details on the soon-to-be-published paper.

APG Research Scientists Dr. Guillaume J. Baby and Dr. Antoine J. Delaunay attended the 28th Reunion des Sciences de la Terre (RST2023) in Rennes, France.

From August 28 to September 1, 2023, APG PhD candidate, Tihana Pensa participated in the International Meeting for Applied Geoscience & Energy (IMAGE 2023 ) held in Houston, Texas.

APG PhD candidate Ali H. Alibrahim recently attended the 14th International School for Foraminifera.

Tihana Pensa, a Ph.D. candidate in the APG research group, received the prestigious Dean's Award 2023 for her outstanding academic performance and contributions to the Energy Resources and Petroleum Engineering Program (ERPE).

On 21 March 2023, the KAUST Discovery magazine highlighted Professor Abdulkader M. Alafifi and Dr. Antoine J. Delaunay's work on the structure of the Red Sea.

PhD candidate Tihana Pensa participated as a committee member of the Young Professionals & Students program at the recently concluded MEOS GEO 2023 conference held in Bahrain.

Professor Abdulkader M. Afifi and Dr. Jakub Fedorik recently developed the most detailed model of part of the active plate boundary between Sinai and Arabia.

Congratulations to Jordania Mildred Zerpa Varela on completing her Masters. For her PhD, Jordania will continue research on the potential for CO2 disposal in the sedimentary basins along the Red Sea coast.

The KAUST-ANPERC carbon mineralization team visited active Carbfix projects in Iceland. They were hosted by Professor Sigurdur Gislason of the University of Iceland and Professor Eric Oelkers.

Congratulations to Ali Altammar for successfully completing his MS thesis. Ali is returning to Dhahran to resume his career in Saudi Aramco’s Exploration Organization.

Congratulations to Murtadha Al Malallah for the successful completion of his MS thesis. Murtadha will remain at KAUST to continue his PhD studies in igneous petrology under the direction of Assistant Professor van der Zwan.
